The sanctuary of Our Lady of Grace and of Santa Maria Goretti in Nettuno, close to Isola Verde Camping Nettuno Rome, is the sanctuary that hosts the corps of the young lady, martyr of purity.
It was built in the 16th century, inside there is the crypt of Santa Maria Goretti and the wooden sculpture of Our Lady of Grace.
Tradition recounts that the wooden statue landed on the coast of Nettuno in 1550, sent from England after the Reformation of the church. In England, at that time, catholic churches were seized and the statues representing the saints destroyed. At which point, some sailors take on bord some statues of Our Lady of Grace and other saints in order to ship them to Naples. But due to a violent storm the ship landed in Nettuno.
The statues of Our Lady of Grace, Saint Rocco and Saint Sebastiano were kept in the then church of Annunziata. The landing had been interpreted as a divine sign of Mary, so all the statues remained there and today they are open to visitors.
